Wat Visounarath Temple (also called Wat Visoun) is the oldest Buddhist temple in Luang Prabang, Laos, and one of the most historically significant religious sites in the country. Built in 1513 under the reign of King Visoun, this temple is not only a sacred place of worship but also a living museum of Lao Buddhist art and architecture.

History of Wat Visounarath

Wat Visounarath was originally constructed during the early 16th century. King Visoun, after whom the temple is named, ordered its creation as a symbol of devotion and to strengthen the role of Buddhism in Laos. Though it has been rebuilt and restored many times due to wars and invasions, the temple remains a vital spiritual center for the Lao people.

One of the temple’s highlights is the That Makmo (Watermelon Stupa), built in 1504. Its round, dome-like shape resembles a watermelon, which is unusual compared to traditional Lao stupas.

Architectural Features

  • Watermelon Stupa (That Makmo) – the most iconic feature of Wat Visounarath, symbolizing purity and enlightenment.
