Built at the end of the 18th century, Wat Mai was commissioned by King Anourout and later expanded during the reign of King Manthatourath. It once served as the residence of the Head of the Lao Buddhist clergy, making it one of the most influential temples in Laos. The temple was also the storage place for the Prabang Buddha statue, a revered national treasure, during the Lao New Year celebrations.
